DOAG Forestry & Soil Resources Division Hosts Smokey Bear’s 80th Birthday Event

Written by on August 8, 2024

Your GuamDepartment of Agriculture’s (DOAG) Forestry & Soil Resources Division (FSRD) will be hosting an outreach event for Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday at the Guam Museum’s outdoor theater on Thursday, 08 August 2024 from 3:00pm- 7:30pm. Smokey Bear and his friends from FSRD will be there to spread the word about wildfire prevention and forest conservation on Guam. The four different pillars of FSRD will be there to share more information about their programs and how they all tie in with Smokey Bear’s message.

Chelsa Muna, DOAG director, states “Smokey Bear has been a symbol of wildfire prevention for generations.  Most of us have grown up with Smokey Bear, and we’re thrilled to celebrate his 80th birthday here in Guam. This event is not only a celebration but a reminder of our shared responsibility to protect our forests and natural resources.”  Christine Fejeran, FSRD chief, invites everyone to come over to participate in interactive games, learn how wildland fire prevention begins with YOU, and win a prize for your efforts. While you’re there, grab something to eat from the local food trucks!

FSRD will recognize and highlight select community members who went beyond the call of duty in recent fire seasons in a special awards ceremony as they have exemplified the wildfire prevention and forest conservation messages that FSRD and Smokey Bear have been promoting for decades.

Special thanks to the staff of the Department of Chamorro Affairs’ Guam Museum and Department of Public Works for collaborating with us to bring this special event to you!
